Introducing our new Art Cocoon Featured Artist, Pastel Artist Paul Harman
This beautiful painting of the Grand Canyon was judged Best Pastel in the April 2018 Plein Air Magazine Salon Competition. It was also featured in the book ‘Strokes of Genius 10’ published by North Light Books.
When Paul was drawing and painting as a teenager, his father asked what he wanted to do as a career and Paul responded that he wanted to be an artist. His father’s angry response was, “You bloody fool, you’ll starve to death!” He continued with his art though, throughout his 25 years as a Deputy for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and then 14 more years with the State of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Paul explains, “It was my escape from the seamier side of life and tragedy I saw daily when working the streets of Los Angeles county cities patrolled by the sheriff’s department.”
After retirement, Paul’s wife gave him a wonderful gift: art lessons with the distinguished pastel artist, Reif Erickson. That’s what really started his journey with pastels. He has also studied with several other pastel painters and spent the last 13 years painting and living the dream of being a professional artist.
